From northern and eastern Ukraine into southern Russia, snow provided timely protection from the coldest air of the season.
Snowfall averaged 2 to 15 cm in Ukraine and
Belarus, with the deepest snow cover (10 cm or more)
noted in eastern Ukraine where readings dipped to -22°C
during the period.
In Russia’s Central and Southern
Districts, 5 to 20 cm of snow (locally more) afforded
adequate protection from temperatures as low as -27°C.
Consequently, this week’s arctic blast had little
detrimental impact on dormant winter wheat.
